The book clubs are moderated by us and designed to trigger inspiring discussions.

THE BOOK

Austin Kleon - Keep Going

From the authors website:

“The world is crazy. Creative work is hard. Whether you’re burned out, starting out, starting over, or wildly successful, the question is always the same: How do you keep going?

In my previous books — the New York Times bestsellers Steal Like An Artist and Show Your Work! — I showed readers how to steal their way to a more creative life and then share their creativity to get discovered. In Keep Going, I’ll show you 10 ways to stay creative, focused, and true to yourself in the face of personal burnout and external distractions:

1. Every day is Groundhog Day.
2. Build a bliss station.
3. Forget the noun, do the verb.
4. Make gifts.
5. The ordinary + extra attention = the extraordinary
6. Slay the art monsters.
7. You’re allowed to change your mind.
8. When in doubt, tidy up.
9. Demons hate fresh air.
10. Plant your garden.”

- Austin Kleon

Jake Knapp - Make time: How to Focus on What Matters Every Day

content.jpeg

What if you could step off the hamster wheel and start taking control of your time and attention? As creators of Google Ventures' renowned 'design sprint', Jake and John have helped hundreds of teams solve important problems by changing how they work. Building on the success of these sprints and their experience designing ubiquitous tech products like Gmail and YouTube, they spent years experimenting with their own personal habits and routines, looking for ways to help individuals optimize their energy, focus, and time. Now they've packaged the most effective tactics into a four-step daily framework that anyone can use to systematically design their days.Making time isn't about radically overhauling your lifestyle; it's about making small shifts in your environment to liberate yourself from constant busyness and distraction. Make Time is a must-read for anyone who has ever thought 'if only there were more hours in the day...'

THE BOOK CLUB

The gym’s book club - BOOKMARKED - is running down in irregular intervals. We decide for a book and meet up to discuss it during several (mostly weekly) meetings throughout a month.

The books we select are meant to foster imagination and/or support us with our creative process. Through discussion we widen our perspective and learn new points of view.

The book clubs are moderated by us and designed to trigger inspiring discussions.

THE BOOK

Yuval Noah Harari - 21 lessons for the 21st century

Harari.jpeg

“In a world deluged by irrelevant information, clarity is power. Censorship works not by blocking the flow of information, but rather by flooding people with disinformation and distractions. 21 Lessons for the 21st Century cuts through these muddy waters and confronts some of the most urgent questions on today’s global agenda.” - Yuval Noah Harari.

THE READING SCHEDULE

We will meet at 4 Thursdays throughout November to discuss one or two parts of the book. Beforehand we will send out questions for reflections that we might cover during the meet-ups.

THU, 8th November - Part 1 and Welcome

THU, 15th November - Part 2

A unbiased jury, will vote for the winning ideas each round until we have a champion.

Who should join:

Creativity Workout << >> Yoga Lawn

In this format co-hosted by Social Entrepreneurship Forum (SEF) and Creativity Gym we mix up a yoga session with a creativity workout. In this intersection, we will explore creativity and mindfulness and complete a yoga praxis. You go home with the positive feeling of an energising workout for body and mind and with new inspiration for your creative life.

Regular creativity workouts are the core of the Creativity Gym and we love to partner up with inspiring organisations. The session is split in 4 parts:

  1. Join us for the intro round 20 minutes prior to the workout (optional).
  2. First, you'll get some warm-up exercises around the topic of creativity (15 minutes).
  3. Next, you'll go through a complete yoga practice led by Josefine, who runs SEF and is giving weekly yoga workshops (45 minutes). Eventually, we invite you the final
  4. creativity exercise and reflect upon your experience (30 minutes / stay for networking afterwards).

Who should join:

  • curious persons who want to reflect on their creative lifestyle
  • yogis that are open for new insights
  • those looking for an energising after work format to exercise body and mind
  • people members interested in SEF, Creativity Gym or both communities
  • all that want to get to meet likeminded creative, curious and mindful people

Important: we open doors 20 minutes before the workout. Join us early, introduce yourself and find out who else is here. To avoid disturbance during the workout, you cannot participate once the workout has started.

The exercises will also give us plenty of topics to chat about while we enjoy an after-work drink. It will be relaxed and easygoing, much fun, yet you’ll train creativity, your downward facing dogs & your mind. The only thing you need is your favorite pen, your yoga mat and comfy / sporty cloths.

Creative Problem Solving

Creative Problem Solving

One way to think about creativity is the ability to solve problems in a novel and appropriate way. However, it is not always easy to generate novel and desirable ideas. The challenge is that thinking creatively requires you to change how you think. And this shift needs to be trained. And this is exactly what will happen in this community workout.

This workout is one of our 'classics'. We'll focus on creative problem solving by tackling little challenges. Each challenge will force you to leave conventional thinking paths. After this workout you will feel more comfortable to use creative thinking styles in your job, in your hobby or in your everyday life.

Who should join:

  • people who try to solve difficult problems in their job or privatley
  • people who would like to train creative thinking styles
  • people who want to enjoy an after work drink while exercising their creative muscle
  • people interested in creativity, design and innovation

Tip: we use the first 10 minutes to introduce ourselves to each other. Come on time so that you don't miss who else is there.

The exercises will also give us plenty of topics to chat about while we enjoy an after-work drink. It will be relaxed and easygoing, much fun, yet you’ll train creativity, design skills & idea muscle. The only thing you need is your favorite pen.

Join us to meet like minded people, train your design skills, ask for advice or feedback on anything and everything, learn what the Creativity Gym is all about, or just have a drink with us!

    Community Workout

Our community workouts are all about training your 'idea muscle' (aka your brain). Being confident in generating ideas will help you with being creative in everyday life. It also will allow you to see more opportunities for solutions.

In our community workouts we focus on one idea generation technique and practice it with a few simple exercises. By the end of the workout, you will have generated a double-digit number of ideas (alone and with others) and learned about how you can implement those techniques into your daily routine.

Also, you'll always hear a short input on a certain creativity aspect (e.g. curiosity, habits, motivation, idea generating advanced, ...). Eventually we have time to chat about our projects and creative endeavors in our everyday life.

It will be relaxed and easygoing, much fun, yet you’ll train creativity, design skills & idea muscle. The only thing you need is your favorite pen.

The rundown (60 minutes workout + 30 minutes optional community meet'n'greet):

      Graphic Design Basics for "Non-Designers"

      Graphic Design Basics for "Non-Designers"

Although design is not reserved to how it looks like, some graphic design basics aren't bad either. In this session you will exercise some basic graphic design concepts that can help you to build up creative confidence and enhance your (visual) problem solving skills.

      The rundown

The first fifteen minutes are reserved for introduction. Who is here and what's their background? If you miss that, you won't know who is at the table :)

Before we start to flex our creative muscles, we will hear some insights from Harald Palma, a designer who started with graphic design 20 years ago. He will share his experiences and tips in a 20 minutes kick-off. This is a premier a Creativity Gym premier and we are happy to have an external expert with us.

After that, you will first learn about 3 basic graphic design concepts and apply them right away in 2 or 3 exercises. Specifically you will learn about: (a)symmetry, scale, hierarchy and grids (and maybe framing). You will see that you can already achieve a lot by applying those basics. You do not need any particular graphical skills. The focus is on basic techniques that are easy to learn and to apply right away.

Bring your favorite pens or pencils in 2-3 different weights and/or colors and you are set. If you want to bring your laptop (Word and Powerpoint are enough) for more diverse experiments.

The input and exercises should take around 60 minutes.

You start into your evening with new visual skills and the great feeling of having flexed your creative muscles. The class is not designed for seasoned (graphic) designers since we really cover some basics.

Your creative coaches for this evening

Harald Palma, founder of palmadesign and seasoned graphic designer with more than 20 years of experience. Studied at the Graphische followed by studies in graphic design. Freelancing in San Francisco, Chicago, New York and Vienna.

Stephan Kardos, founder of the Creativity Gym and an autodidact Designer who acquired his graphic design skills in various self-started projects, developed those ever since and even designed a card game once.

      In a nutshell

Fun, relaxed, easy going yet you’ll learn new design techniques that can help you professionally or personally while meeting like-minded people.

      Why Graphic Design Basics?

While well designed graphical work is a craft and art that demands continuous practice to master, everybody can learn and apply graphic basics. Improved graphic skills can help in many areas, private and professional. From the enhanced powerpoint presentation, over confidence to get started with this visual project you had in mind to enhanced visual problem solving skills. Everybody can benefit from a basic understanding of visual language.

Design Research Essentials: Interviewing and Observation

Design is as much problem understanding as it is problem solving. In this session you will learn and practice two handy design research tools: interviewing and observing. Both can help you to understand the people you design for.

      The rundown

The first fifteen minutes are reserved for introduction. Who is here and what's their background? If you miss that, you won't know who is at the table :)

Then we'll first give you a rough introduction on the topic of design research. We'll start with two mini-tasks as warm-up; one for interviewing and another for observation. After that you will practice your your newly acquired knowledge over two more demanding tasks. This should take an hour.

Eventually, we'll chat about our design research experiences while enjoying an after-work drink. You end your working day with a new design skill and the great feeling of having flexed your creative muscles.

      In a nutshell

Fun, relaxed, easy going yet you’ll learn a new design tool that can help you professionally or personally while meeting like-minded people.

      Why Design Research?

Deep understanding the people you design for is key to come up with an insightful solution to a challenge, a problem or an opportunity. Designers use many tools to learn more about people's motivations, habits, behaviours and needs. Face-to-face interviews as well as observation are surely among the essential tools of a designer. It's also perfect for freelancers, entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs, people with a creative project in mind or curious individuals eager to exercise their design muscle.
