Design is as much problem understanding as it is problem solving. In this session you will learn and practice two handy design research tools: interviewing and observing. Both can help you to understand the people you design for.
The first fifteen minutes are reserved for introduction. Who is here and what's their background? If you miss that, you won't know who is at the table :)
Then we'll first give you a rough introduction on the topic of design research. We'll start with two mini-tasks as warm-up; one for interviewing and another for observation. After that you will practice your your newly acquired knowledge over two more demanding tasks. This should take an hour.
Eventually, we'll chat about our design research experiences while enjoying an after-work drink. You end your working day with a new design skill and the great feeling of having flexed your creative muscles.
In a nutshell
Fun, relaxed, easy going yet you’ll learn a new design tool that can help you professionally or personally while meeting like-minded people.
Why Design Research?
Deep understanding the people you design for is key to come up with an insightful solution to a challenge, a problem or an opportunity. Designers use many tools to learn more about people's motivations, habits, behaviours and needs. Face-to-face interviews as well as observation are surely among the essential tools of a designer. It's also perfect for freelancers, entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs, people with a creative project in mind or curious individuals eager to exercise their design muscle.
